Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
TownAR builds visitor apps for towns and tourism bureaus. This policy explains what the TownAR mobile apps and this website collect, why, and what choices you have. It applies to every town edition of the app.
What we collect
If you never create an account, the app works fully and we store no personal details about you. We do record anonymous activity events — for example "an AR target was scanned" or "a game was played" — so the town can see which attractions visitors enjoy. These events are tied to a random per-install identifier, not to your name, email, or phone number.
If you create an account (optional, used for prize eligibility and leaderboards), we store the details you enter: your name, email address, and — only if you choose to provide it — a mailing address so the town can send a prize. Your activity events are then associated with that account.
Location. Some features (the town map, distance hints, passport stamps collected by being at a location) use your device location. Location is used on your device to decide what to show you; we do not store a history of your movements on our servers. You can deny or revoke location permission at any time in your device settings and the rest of the app keeps working.
Camera. The AR features use your camera to recognize murals, signs, and artwork. Camera frames are processed on your device only. We do not upload, record, or store photos or video from your camera.
How we use it
- To run the app's features (maps, hunts, games, passport rewards, coupons).
- To give the town aggregate visitor statistics — how many people scanned a target, which businesses got the most views, what times of day are busiest.
- To contact you about a prize you earned, if you gave us an email or address for that.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising or share it with advertisers.
Who can see it
Staff of the town or tourism bureau whose app you are using can see their own visitors' accounts and activity in their admin portal. Towns cannot see each other's data. Local businesses with a portal account can see statistics about their own listing only. We use Microsoft Azure for hosting and database services; data is stored in the United States.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account and its personal details at any time — from Profile → Delete my account in the app, or on our account deletion page. Deletion removes your name, email, and address. Anonymous activity counts may remain in the town's aggregate statistics, with nothing linking them to you.
Children
TownAR apps are family-friendly and can be used without an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes materially we will update the date above and note it in the app. Questions, or a request to see or delete your data: privacy@townar.com.
